Different aspects of health behavior and participants' ways of dealing with illness were assessed in the intake assessment (EE) and in the intensive protocol (IP):

EE:
Screening: In the intake assessment (EE), participants were asked whether they were in medical treatment (2 questions) and about the use of medication ( 2 questions).

IP:
(a) Health behavior, in the sense of actively doing something for one's health, was assessed only at measurement Time 1 in the "Gesundheit - Schlaf" (Health - Sleep) interview. Nine examples were given by which participants could rate whether they do anything to stay healthy. For each example, they could describe two measures they had taken, e.g. to stay physically fit. The answers were coded. (s.b.)
Sleep was assessed in the intensive protocol (IP) within the health and sleep questionnaire, too.

Further aspects of health behavior assessed in the IP are:
(b) Illness beliefs, assessed with the illness belief scale (Linden, Nather & Wilms, 1988; see Literature);
(c) Frequency of contacts to a doctor;
(d) Non-medical treatment and perception of illnesses assessed with the semi-structured "Beschwerden - Behandlung - Arzneimittel" (Complaints - Treatment - Medication) interview (developed by the BASE psychiatry unit)

Literature: Helmchen, Baltes, Geiselmann, Kanowski, Linden, Reischies, Wagner, & Wilms, 1996; Helmchen, Baltes, Geiselmann, Kanowski, Linden, Reischies, Wagner, Wernicke, & Wilms, 1999.
